Department of Space (DOS) established in June 1972 has Indian Space Research Organisation ( ISRO ) as its executive wing that carries out space programme through its centers located at different parts of the country.

Main objective of the Indian space programme includes development of satellite, payloads, launch vehicles, sounding rockets for the application of advanced technologies to the real problems of common masses.

ISRO has launched nearly 36 satellites, (communications and remote sensing) since 1975 when the first satellite 'Aryabhatta' was launched. Currently ISRO has launched CARTOSAT-I satellite through Polar Satellite launch vehicle PSLV-C6 on May 6, 2005 and reiterated the capability of developing and launching of satellite entirely on indigenous efforts.

Space Applications Center (SAC) a unit of ISRO situated at Ahmedabad conducts research and development in satellite communication and remote sensing . It also designs and builds communication , remote sensing and meteorological satellite payloads and satellite communication earth station equipments. Currently the center is engaged in development of INSAT communication and meteorological payloads and cameras for IRS satellites.

Meteorology & Oceanography Group (MOG) at Space Applications Centre (SAC), Ahmedabad, is entrusted with the following mandate:

"Ensuring a well coordinated arrangement to maximize the application potential of satellite data through high quality R & D in atmospheric and oceanographic sciences (encompassing bio-geo-physical retrievals and study of various process through dynamic modeling) leading to operational applications and generate implementable products & services"

The activities in MOG, focus on the following activities:

Mission specific retrievals of geo-bio-physical parameters and value addition through models for radiative transfer and various inversion techniques

Calibration of data, validation and inter-comparison of bio-geo-physical products to ensure quality controlled and continuous data sets

Applications of satellite data in major projects

Research analysis / studies for parameter retrieval / sensor response / selection in relation to new sensors and their potential applications

Meteorological and Oceanographic data products dissemination and analysis (MOSDAC)

Academic collaboration with national and international institutions for state-of-art model developments and capacity building in atmospheric science and oceanography. (such as CSSTEAP courses, workshops and specific training courses)

MOG is organized for administrative in terms of following divisions/ facilities:

Atmospheric Sciences Division (ASD)

Oceanic Sciences Division (OSD)

Computer Facility at Bopal campus(CFB)

MOSDAC facility

SATMET training activity (under CSSTE-AP)
