Cyclone Risk Assessment System

Over Indian coast, especially east coast, severe cyclones have caused more damage than any other natural disaster, resulting in enormous loss of life and property and irreparable alteration of landscape due to coastal erosion.

Cyclone Risk Assessment System GUI interface takes in consideration two regions Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, for tracking the cyclone path and assessment of the risk due to damage caused by tropical cyclones over the last 100 years. It shows the risk due to cyclone at different places and at different time of year. The historical records of the tropical cyclones (provided by IMD e-atlas) are used here for the analysis.

Using this package the most basic level risk-scenario can help planners and decision makers in various ways. Moreover, a probabilistic assessment of the tropical cyclone related hazard has a specific significance to ISRO’s space vehicle launch program as well, as Shriharikota, the satellite launching facility of ISRO is located at the east coast of India and is highly vulnerable to tropical cyclones, from Bay of Bengal.

This package will be useful to emergency planners, scientists and engineers, involved with space launch vehicle activity, and scientific community involved in the tropical cyclone research.

This package will help to know the risk assessment at a particular location (given latitude – longitude) for a particular period ( ± 5,10 or 15 days ). For further details of the operations of the package please refer to the help topics given in the GUI menu.
